How To Protect Yourself From The Dangers Of Email SPAM – (for Outlook, Outlook Express,Thunderbird, Windows Mail )
Before we start discussing the dangers of Spam email, let’s define what spam really is –
In its loosest definition SPAM is unwanted email – email you received that you did not request.
Based on that definition spam, one could consider those stupid jokes that your Aunt Harriet sends you that have been forwarded hundreds of times with everyone else’s email addresses listed along with yours, as spam. Or those follow up emails from JCPenny that you receive for weeks after you made a purchase from their catalog. But the SPAM we’re talking about here is the email that relentlessly fills your email inbox which out numbers the legitimate email messages you’d like to read.
Is SPAM illegal? –
From Wikipedia: The CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 (15 U.S.C. 7701, et seq., Public Law No. 108-187, was S.877 of the 108th United States Congress), signed into law by President George W. Bush on December 16, 2003, established the United States’ first national standards for the sending of commercial e-mail and requires the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to enforce its provisions. The acronym CAN-SPAM derives from the bill’s full name: Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing Act of 2003. This is also a play on the usual term for unsolicited email of this type, spam.
What does this mean in English? It means that SPAM emails are illegal. –
But illegal vs enforceable many times are two different things. As you read on, it will become clear why enforcement is very difficult and thus why this problem of SPAM is not going away anytime soon.
Where does SPAM e-mail come from? –
Spam, as defined by Wikipedia, is the use of electronic messaging systems (including most broadcast media, digital delivery systems) to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately.
According to Abuse.net, many spammers use “hit and run” spamming in which they get a trial dial-up account at an Internet provider for a few days, send tens of thousands of messages, then abandon the account (unless the provider notices what they’re doing and cancels it first), leaving the unsuspecting provider to clean up the mess. Many spammers have done this hundreds of times, forcing the providers to waste staff time both on the cleanup and on monitoring their trial accounts for abuse.
This next source of SPAM may and should make you take pause. Ready for this shocker?
By some estimates, the biggest source of SPAM is virus infected computers. That’s right. There are millions of computers infected with viruses that remain untreated by their owners. The virus plants a program on the infected computer that sends out SPAM email messages all day long without the knowledge of the PC owner! This is done in the background and the owner doesn’t even know it’s happening. (Thus the importance of a virus free and protected PC – see SpeedUpYourPCToday.com’s video regarding how to best protect your computer.)
So the next time your friend tells you that their computer has a virus and they think it’s no big deal, be sure and thank them for all the SPAM their computer is spewing out.
No one ever buys anything from that junk e-mail do they? What’s the point?
Well, sadly, according to some experts, 46% of computer users open up SPAM emails putting their computers at risk. Apparently enough of them actually click on the links inside making it worthwhile for the SPAMMERS to make money….lots of money.
Not all SPAM emails are intended to spread viruses. Many are sent with the intent of selling you something legitimate and thus the spammers get paid by the companies they are promoting.
The total volume of spam is growing every year because it is very profitable for the spammers. It’s estimated by one expert source that in August 2010, over 200 billion SPAM emails were sent per day. That’s billion with a “b”.
Do the math. If 10% of those messages make it into email inboxes and 46% get opened and if ½ of a percent of those actually buy something that’s over 4 million sales a day.
And it cost nearly nothing to send.
Why is email spam or junk mail in your inbox so dangerous?
In the old days, many computer viruses were spread by email attachments. Typically, that is not the case today. Instead, viruses are downloaded directly to your computer by opening up a “window” between your PC and a bad guy web site by clicking on an innocent looking link inside a piece of SPAM email.
SPAM is more than just a nuisance. The spammer who sent the email is attempting to take your money. Yes, that’s right. Either through infecting your PC and stealing your usernames and passwords or getting you to buy products via fake offers, etc. It’s a con game; make no mistake about.
It’s also a time suck. And yes, your time is valuable. –
If you are astute and they don’t steal your money, they are still stealing your time. There is no argument: SPAM email is a time suck.
A huge time suck.
By some estimates, SPAM email messages account for 85% of all email sent. Yes, 85%! Even if you only get, say 100 emails a day, you still have to look through them to see which ones are legitimate and which ones aren’t. This takes time and nothing is more valuable than time; your time.
